Gem Prep and Medicaid

Provided below is some helpful information about Medicaid Benefits and our school. As we all know, medical related information can be confusing and complicated. If you have any questions or need more information, please don't hesitate to give us a call.

How do Medicaid Benefits Work at Gem Prep Schools?

Each school provides Special Education and related services as a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE), at no cost to parents, in the least restrictive environment (LRE). Gem Prep can seek reimbursement through Medicaid for some Special Education and related services for students who are eligible for Medicaid Benefits. Section 300.154 of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act requires that the School District receive parental written informed consent in order to seek Medicaid Reimbursement.

What does Informed Parental Consent mean?

  • The parent/guardian understands that submitting claims for reimbursement for services provided to their child by the district will not impact their ability to access these services for their child outside the school setting. Nor will any cost be incurred by the family, including: co-pays, deductibles, loss of eligibility or impact on lifetime benefits.
  • The parent/guardian understands that the district must provide special education and related services regardless of their consent to give permission to access Medicaid reimbursement.
  • The parent/guardian understands that their consent is voluntary and they may revoke their consent in writing at any time after it is given. If consent is revoked, the school department will no longer bill Medicaid from that date forward.
  • The parent/guardian understands that the district follows both HIPAA (Federal Health Privacy Act) and FERPA (Federal Education Privacy Act) requirements to protect confidential information and that Medicaid funds received by the district directly support education in our district.
  • The parent/guardian understands that if they refuse consent or if they revoke this consent, the school district is still responsible to provide special education and any related services identified for their child through the special education eligibility processes and that these services will be provided at no cost to family.

When Permission is Given or Denied:

  • The parent/guardian understands that if they refuse consent or if they revoke this consent in writing, the school district is still responsible to provide special education and any related services identified for their child through the special education eligibility processes and that these services will be provided at no cost to me.
